fix(ai-utils, openai-base, ai-openrouter): let the Responses body end before aborting after a terminal event - #1966
After response.completed, the OpenAI and OpenRouter Responses adapters stop reading at once. The SDK then aborts the request, and a gateway such as Cloudflare AI Gateway logs a complete, billed call as a client cancel (499). This PR lets the body end by itself for up to 250 ms. It aborts the request only after that time. chat() still returns at once (#1445).
🎯 Changes
A new internal helper, drainAfterTerminal, is added to @tanstack/ai-utils. Both adapter packages use it.
When the consumer stops right after a terminal event (response.completed, response.failed, response.incomplete, error), the helper reads the rest of the body in the background. If the body has not ended after 250 ms, the helper stops the request.
OpenRouter: the SDK stream is a ReadableStream. The helper reads it with a reader and stops it with reader.cancel().
OpenAI: the helper stops the SDK Stream with stream.controller.abort().
A stop on any other event still closes the stream at once.
OpenRouter gets the event type from normalizeStreamEvent, so the SDK's UNKNOWN wrapper is handled in one place.
Docs: not changed. Nothing user-facing changes, apart from fewer 499s in gateway logs.
Changesets: @tanstack/openai-base, @tanstack/ai-openrouter and @tanstack/ai-utils (patch).
A maintainer updated this branch from review. The two package copies of the helper became one helper in ai-utils. The PR also has new fake-timer unit tests and a corrected doc comment.
I have tested code changes locally with pnpm run test:pr, or these tests do not apply to this pull request.
I fully understand the code in this pull request, including any code generated with AI assistance.

Changeset: I added a changeset (pnpm changeset), or this PR does not change a published package.
🚀 Release Impact
This change affects published code, and I have generated a changeset.
This change is docs/CI/dev-only (no release).
Root cause
Issue. Every streaming Responses call through @tanstack/openai-base or @tanstack/ai-openrouter aborts its HTTP request after the last event. A gateway logs these complete calls as client cancels (499).
Cause. The adapters break or return at the terminal event, so they do not wait for EOF (#1445). For OpenAI, the generator finally in the SDK Stream calls controller.abort() when the consumer leaves early. For OpenRouter, the return() of the EventStream iterator cancels the fetch body.
Fix. The adapters read through drainAfterTerminal. When the last event was terminal, its finally does not stop the request at once. It reads the rest of the body in the background, and it stops the request only after 250 ms.
Set a flag at each adapter break site. With a flag, the helper would not need to know the terminal events. But each break site would change, and now only one line changes at each loop head.
Testing
Commands run
A reviewer-written repro (not from this PR) on clean main (9ac67f3ac). In openai-base and in ai-openrouter, it failed with expected true to be false: the body was aborted or cancelled before it closed.
The same repro on this branch passed in both packages.
vitest run passed for ai-utils/tests/drain-after-terminal.test.ts (8), openai-base/tests/responses-stream-drain.test.ts (4) and ai-openrouter/tests/responses-stream-drain.test.ts (4).
tsc --noEmit passed in ai-utils, openai-base and ai-openrouter. oxlint showed no new errors.
Not run: pnpm test:pr and the full package suites. CI runs them.
No E2E test was added. aimock cannot keep the body open after the last chunk, and it cannot see a client cancel. So main and this branch behave the same against aimock.
Manual test
On main, send a streaming OpenAI Responses chat() call through Cloudflare AI Gateway. The gateway log shows 499.
On this branch, send the same call. The gateway log shows 200.
Edge case: abort the caller's abortController less than 250 ms after RUN_FINISHED. The request aborts, and there is no unhandled rejection.
How this PR makes testing easy
packages/ai-utils/tests/drain-after-terminal.test.ts uses fake timers. It covers all 4 terminal events, the 249/250 ms limit, a stop on a non-terminal event, and an iterable with and without abort.
packages/*/tests/responses-stream-drain.test.ts runs the real SDKs with a fake fetch, through chatStream and structuredOutputStream.
Low. A connection can stay open for up to 250 ms after the response ends. Streams without a controller (for example, mocked plain generators) close at once, as before. To roll back, revert the PR.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
OpenAI and OpenRouter Responses streams now allow up to 250 ms for the response body to finish after a terminal event, rather than cancelling it immediately.
Streams that finish within that window can close normally; streams that remain open are cancelled after the wait, helping prevent unfinished responses from lingering.
… aborting after a terminal event
After response.completed the adapters stopped reading at once. The OpenAI SDK
aborted the request and the OpenRouter SDK cancelled its event stream and the
fetch body. A gateway then logged the finished call as a client cancel (499).
Read the rest of the body in the background and abort only if it has not ended
after 250 ms.

The Responses adapters now drain the response body after a terminal event. The shared utility recognizes terminal events and stops a body that remains open after 250 ms. Tests cover both adapters and the utility’s handling of readable streams and async iterables.
drainAfterTerminal recognizes terminal events and drains the remaining source after the consumer stops. It stops a source that remains open after 250 ms. Tests cover readable streams, async iterables, and non-terminal events.
The adapter routes structured-output and regular Responses streams through drainResponsesStream. Tests check that a body closing after 20 ms is not aborted and that a body left open is aborted after the adapter call returns.
The adapter routes structured-output and regular Responses streams through drainAfterTerminal, using normalized event types. Tests check that a body closing after 20 ms is not cancelled and that a body left open is cancelled after the adapter call returns.

The bounded drain is implemented for both adapters, but an event-classification failure can leave its response body open. This narrow cleanup issue warrants a localized fix or explicit follow-up; no broader merge-blocking failure is established.

Explanation
The changed files map to the linked objectives. The ai-utils helper and its test implement the bounded drain. The two adapter packages call the helper in their chat and structured-output loops. The responses-stream-drain.test.ts files test that behavior. The changesets cover the three published packages that changed. The ai-utils index now exports drainAfterTerminal. That export is a new surface in a published package, but both adapters need it, so it supports the objective. The OpenRouter change to read the event type through normalizeStreamEvent serves the same loop, so it is in scope. No unrelated refactoring or documentation change appears in the summary. Docs are unchanged, as the PR states.

Explanation
[#1965, OpenAI Responses] Met in source. packages/ai-utils/src/drain-after-terminal.ts (reviewed at head) stops after a terminal event (response.completed, response.failed, response.incomplete, error) by reading the rest of the body in the background. It calls the supplied abort callback only after DRAIN_AFTER_TERMINAL_MS (250 ms), and it clears the timer when the drain ends. A stop on a non-terminal event, or a stream with no abort callback, calls iterator.return() at once. packages/openai-base/src/adapters/responses-text.ts imports drainAfterTerminal. Per the PR summary, its drain helper passes an abort callback that calls controller.abort() for SDK Stream instances. I read the import, not the full wiring, because the file read was truncated.
[#1965, OpenRouter, stated in the issue as 'the same applies'] Not established. The helper uses a reader and reader.cancel() only when the source is an instance of ReadableStream. The ai-openrouter call sites (per the PR summary) pass no abort callback. So for a source that is not a ReadableStream, the helper closes at once, and the 499 cause remains. Nothing read so far shows that the @openrouter/sdk 0.13.20 event stream is a ReadableStream. The author's fake-fetch tests would show it, but I did not run them or read them.
Unverified: the test results reported by the author, and the OpenRouter SDK stream type. Limit: three repository inspections were used.
Resolution
Show that the @openrouter/sdk event stream returned by the OpenRouter adapter is a ReadableStream, for example from the SDK type declarations or a test that asserts the reader path. Or add an abort path for the OpenRouter source that is not a ReadableStream. Also confirm that responses-stream-drain.test.ts in ai-openrouter fails on main and passes on this branch.

…erminal helper
Move the duplicated helper into @tanstack/ai-utils. ReadableStreams are
read with a reader so they can be cancelled during a pending read; other
iterables take an abort callback (the OpenAI SDK Stream controller).
OpenRouter reuses normalizeStreamEvent for the event type. Fix the doc
comment, drop wall-clock assertions, and add fake-timer unit tests.

Keep the source stop path open when event classification fails.
When eventType(step.value) throws, the catch block sets ended = true. finally then calls source.release(). For a ReadableStream, release() only releases the reader lock, so the body is not cancelled. For other iterables, release() does nothing. The response can remain open and unread.
Remove the assignment from the catch block. finally then takes the close path when no terminal event was read. After a terminal event, it drains the body for up to 250 ms and then stops the source.

Thanks @pcbeingused333, good catch. I reproduced the 499 abort on main for both OpenAI and OpenRouter with my own test, confirmed the fix, then moved the helper into @tanstack/ai-utils as one definition with fake-timer tests.
