Clarification on policy of AI-assisted code generation?

I was considering rapidly-prototyping some fixes and errors that need correction listed in the issues section, along with my own additions in a fork. I could easily rewrite the AI-generated code by hand if need be, but I didn't (well, I could have missed it) see anything mentioning policy on AI-generated code. I wanted to get an outright confirmation or answer. Either way, will continue to support. Thanks!

Hi @dotjax, thanks for your interest in the project and willingness to help! :) Indeed, I don't think I described anywhere yet an AI policy but I have one in mind...

In terms of coding, I agree the tools are helpful and I use them a lot at work myself. What I would be worried about is getting the project a bit out of hands if suddenly there is too much generated code. I can't deny there is a speed gain to using them (though that comes at a questionable cost!). So feel free to use them as you see fit but please keep control of your/our code and try not too propose merges that are too over-engineered or that you really could not have wrote yourself.

Then in terms of "AI features" for Scriptorium itself I'd put a veto on putting too much of that. I think that Scriptorium should be a tool helping people to write and that having LanguageTool should be largely enough of AI tooling to assist on that. I would not want to see things added to let an LLM (re)write entire parts of text.

Also please let me know which issue(s) you are planning on working on and claim them in the tool. With the holidays coming up I was planning on catching up a bit on the backlog, let's coordinate so we don't end up working on the same items

Currently, my goals are to:

1. Figure out what's going on with saves, potentially optimize it.
2. Modify and enhance the UI experience for writing that is more optimal for distraction-free/focusing (think Focuswriter).
3. Markdown support.
4. A true third panel for notes and clippings.
5. Reorganization of code/making it more modular and clearer syntax for dum-dums like me (lol).

That's basically it. I want to see if I can hunt down issues with the saving/loading, and make the UI/writing window more friendly to my old eyes. lol

I am extremely picky with AI-generated code, in that I go through and edit, and tweak, because I can never rely on them to fully write something in a non-fluffy, overly-complicated-way.

There's no good app on Linux for writing/formatting EPUB that is native to GKT and also does not look like it came from 1984 or the late 90s. Anyway, I think it'd be best if I fork this so you can see what I'm doing, right?

Oh, to clarify: no, no AI features. I meant using AI to help write missing features/fixes that I hand-review/edit. I don't think this app should have AI shoved into it. We have enough of that everywhere else.

Sounds good :-) Yes, the proper way to contribute would be for you to fork and do a pull request later on. The saves have some issues indeed and this problem is tied to your number 5, both being the result of code design changes over time and not consistently being applied. It was the first item on my todo list too but please feel free to have a go at it first if you want.

For 2 and 3, could we please align on the design first? Happy to discuss that over Matrix or even a video call if you want.

Point 4 is a big need indeed! In my mind that would go as another tab in "Plan" (not sure what you meant by "true third panel"). Someone was also interested in working on it and we started the discussion at #3

Sounds good! It's your project, so I won't force any changes or anything. I can make some mock-ups, too. I have amblyopia (it's where my brain ignores the left eye), so having that third panel and more unified layout would be so useful. Same with font sizes and stuff. I do want to say your app is well done. I don't want to imply it's bad. It's very good. And I'm a novice programmer that still relies on AI to help me a lot of the way.

Hi @dotjax ! I just became aware of Flathub policy on AI apps via a read about a new one. I had missed that and the content align with what we agreed on but I thought it could be worth bringing it up anyway here. As we discussed, fine to use LLMs as a support but let's all keep Scriptorium a human driven project :-)
