I have pushed updates to the code. If it isn't merged, I would create a new repo that uses with the improvements.

Check out python_clamd, an actively maintained rewrite of the clamd library.
Since this library isn't actively maintained, I have written a fork of the repo I would try to maintain.

Another alternative is the actively maintained fork artefactual-labs/clamav-client.
