test-dependency-docs-scope and build/test scripts use declare -A and mapfile, which require bash 4+ and silently misbehave or fail outright on macOS stock bash 3.2. otelconfig-validate-config also relies on the GNU coreutils timeout command and GNU-style sed -i, neither of which work on stock macOS. Add version guards, a timeout/gtimeout fallback, and a portable sed replacement. Closes #1125 Signed-off-by: mesutoezdil <mesudozdil@gmail.com>

Stock macOS ships neither GNU timeout nor gtimeout, so the earlier guard just errored out before running validation. Reuse the manual background-process fallback already used in byoo-otel-collector/scripts/validate-otelconfig.sh: try timeout, then gtimeout, then run the command in the background and kill it after the deadline. Reviewed, and I ran the fallback rather than only reading it. The sed -i swaps are correct; the timeout fallback has two bugs I could reproduce.
sed -i -> temp file and move
Correct and portable, in both scripts. Same-directory mv, so it is atomic. No concerns.
run_with_timeout has two bugs
I extracted the function and exercised it directly:
fast command, 3s timeout : rc=0 elapsed=3003ms <- expected ~0ms
sleep 10, 1s timeout : rc=143 elapsed=2004ms <- accepted by the caller
trap "" TERM, 1s timeout : rc=137 elapsed=2008ms <- rejected by the caller
1. Every call blocks for the full timeout, even when the command finishes instantly.
The timer subshell inherits the command substitution's stdout. kill "${timer}" kills the subshell but orphans its sleep, which keeps the pipe open, so $(run_with_timeout …) cannot return until that sleep exits. The timeout becomes a floor rather than a ceiling.
validate_otel_config is called once per config in a matrix loop, so on macOS this adds 2 seconds per config for no reason.
Redirecting the timer fixes it:
- (
+ (
sleep "${seconds}"
kill -TERM "${pid}" 2>/dev/null
sleep 1
kill -KILL "${pid}" 2>/dev/null
- ) &
+ ) >/dev/null 2>&1 &2. A process that ignores SIGTERM returns 137, and the caller rejects it.
validate_otel_config accepts 0, 124 and 143. GNU timeout returns 124 when it kills the command, which is why 124 is in that list. The fallback returns 143 after SIGTERM, which is accepted, but 137 once it escalates to SIGKILL, which is not:
Unknown error (exit code: 137)
So a config that hangs and ignores TERM is reported as a validation failure rather than as a timeout. Returning 124 when the timer fired would match timeout's contract and keep the caller's existing branch correct.
Worth stating in the description
The fallback only runs when neither timeout nor gtimeout is present, so Linux CI never executes it. It is untested code on exactly the platform it exists for, which is worth a line in the PR body so a reviewer does not assume CI covered it.
Same title issue as #1123
The title says "support macOS bash 3.2", but run-go-unit-tests, test-dependency-docs-scope and build-all.sh now hard-exit on bash < 4. Failing fast with guidance is the right call; it just is not support. Suggest wording that says so.
Checks I ran
test-dependency-docs-scope passes, and all four touched scripts pass bash -n. Nothing here is risky for CI, since the guards are no-ops on the bash 5 CI runs.
The GNU-only timeout and sed -i were genuine blockers for anyone developing on macOS; thanks for chasing them down.

test-dependency-docs-scope, run-go-unit-tests, and build-all.sh use
declare -A/mapfile (bash 4+ only) and either silently misreport results
or crash on macOS stock bash 3.2. otelconfig-validate-config and
otelconfig-update-examples relied on GNU-only timeout and sed -i.
Added version guards, a timeout/gtimeout fallback, and a portable sed
replacement.
