fix(db): one select rule for aggregate queries, with and without groupBy - #2094
Conversation
An aggregate without groupBy dropped every non-aggregate select field. A literal or a parent field, which is constant within an include route, now appears beside the aggregate. A field of the query's own sources throws NonAggregateExpressionNotInGroupByError, as with groupBy. The optimizer oracle's global aggregate selected b.k and relied on it being undefined; it now selects max(b.k), so a pushed-down predicate would still change the total. The architecture records that query-equal parents share a route as a limit. Co-authored-by: Isaac <no-reply@databricks.com>

The validator walked any object with Object.values, so a spread's ref proxy recursed without end and crashed compilation, and it skipped every expression that contained an aggregate, so a source field outside the aggregates of a wrapped, conditional or nested value was still dropped. It now walks only select and expression nodes and stops at aggregates. A spread beside an aggregate throws, because a route's parent context holds only the parent fields the query names. The single-group fields are evaluated once per row, and the architecture states the law in its own paragraph with its limits. Co-authored-by: Isaac <no-reply@databricks.com>
A default empty set silently turned off the single-group source-field check. The aliases are now a required argument after the value identity. The pipeline test that pinned the old unvalidated single group now expects the throw. Co-authored-by: Isaac <no-reply@databricks.com>
A new oracle generates select shapes of an aggregate without groupBy at the top level and in an include, through parent and source changes. Its model predicts a throw exactly when a source field appears outside an aggregate or the shape spreads a row, and otherwise every group's values. It fails on main, on this PR's first head (the wrapped source field the review found), and on mutants that ignore refs inside functions, accept spreads, or treat aggregate arguments as source fields. Co-authored-by: Isaac <no-reply@databricks.com>
A caseWhen whose branches are select objects compiles to a conditional select, not a function call, so it has its own validation path. The oracle review found that mutants skipping that path survived because the grammar never built one. The grammar now does, and both mutants fail. Co-authored-by: Isaac <no-reply@databricks.com>
main removed collectScopeAliases with the lexical alias shadowing change, so the merged tree failed to build. The single-group check now takes the aliases from getAllSources. Co-authored-by: Isaac <no-reply@databricks.com>

Match single-group source fields by binding identity.
When an include reuses its parent alias, extractCorrelation distinguishes parent and child references by bindingId. The child compiler passes only aliases to processGroupBy, while lacksGroupValue checks only the reference alias. A parent field can therefore be classified as a child source field and throw NonAggregateExpressionNotInGroupByError.
This breaks the supported include case that selects issue.x beside count(c.id). Pass the current source bindings and use them for bound references. Keep alias fallback for unbound references used by the existing direct processGroupBy callers.

A select value of an aggregate query needs one value per group outside its aggregates: a literal, a group key, or a parent field. The grouped path rejected literals and parent fields, and skipped the parts of a wrapped aggregate outside its aggregates, so add(count(c.id), c.v) with groupBy(c.k) dropped c.v silently. Both paths now use one group-key aware check. A nested include beside an aggregate throws, with or without groupBy; without it, it was null. The select oracle, renamed aggregate-select-oracle, now also generates groupBy(c.k), the group-key leaf, and a nested include. Mutants that restore main's grouped rejection, skip wrapped aggregates when grouped, or accept a nested include each fail it. Co-authored-by: Isaac <no-reply@databricks.com>

The review found that a select value holding the group key inside a function, nested object or conditional passed validation but was evaluated without the key, so groupBy queries published undefined or wrong values; a computed group key such as upper(c.k) was not substituted at all; and a grouped select with a nested include and no aggregate published null. Every non-aggregate value now goes through the same group-key substitution as a wrapped aggregate, which also matches computed group expressions, and the separate exact-key mapping and constant-field paths are gone. A nested include throws in any grouped or aggregate select. The aggregate oracle missed these at CI scale: grouped shapes that compile were rare, conditions could not equal a key, and no history grouped by a computed expression. It now chooses the grouping first, favours the group key in grouped histories, compares conditions with key values, groups by upper(c.k), generates grouped shapes without aggregates, and pins the review's counterexample. It fails on the previous head at the default run count; mutants that substitute only ref keys or check includes only beside aggregates fail too. Co-authored-by: Isaac <no-reply@databricks.com>

…ue rule to HAVING The aggregate select oracle now generates an include source that shadows the parent alias, the raw field c.k beside computed group keys, a group key holding a list literal, key-changing source updates, and an aggregate-free HAVING condition. Each was RED: a shadowed parent field threw, a rebuilt list literal did not match its group key, and HAVING neither read group keys nor rejected other source fields. Aggregate queries no longer project rows before grouping, and the error message no longer names only SELECT. Co-authored-by: Isaac <no-reply@databricks.com>
The aggregate select oracle now generates HAVING conditions that compare an aggregate, selected as a field or not, and group keys holding a Date or NaN literal. It found that an aggregate query without groupBy whose select only wraps its aggregate rejected HAVING; the check now uses the same aggregate predicate as the rest of the compiler. Co-authored-by: Isaac <no-reply@databricks.com>
A literal beside an aggregate is now published, so the optimizer semantics oracle checks that an outer predicate on it, under a left join, leaves each aggregate whole, with and without groupBy. A mutant that pushes predicates past every subquery guard fails it. Co-authored-by: Isaac <no-reply@databricks.com>
…order An ungrouped field of a unionAll aggregate query compiled and published undefined, because the source check knew only aliased sources. Refs are now classified by binding, and after a unionAll an unbound ref names a field of the union's rows. A grouped row now keeps the select's field order. The aggregate oracle generates a unionAll source and checks field order; both failed on the previous head. Unreachable aggregate, spread and include branches in the select and grouped compilers are removed, the evaluation row is built once per group, and HAVING copies the selected row only when it adds group keys. After a unionAll, refs without a binding count as fields of the union's rows, and that wrongly included $selected, so HAVING on a select alias threw. The aggregate oracle now generates HAVING on $selected, applying HAVING after the select; it failed on the previous head. 🎯 Changes
An aggregate query without
groupByhas one group, or one group for each parent inside an include. Before this change, that path dropped every select field that was not an aggregate:With
groupBy, a field that is not grouped already throwsNonAggregateExpressionNotInGroupByError. WithoutgroupBy, the field wasundefined, with no error. Now a field of an aggregate without
groupByhas two possible results:NonAggregateExpressionNotInGroupByError, as withgroupBy. This applies also when the field is outside the aggregates of a wrapped, conditional or nested value, such asadd(count(c.id), c.v).{ ...c, n: count(c.id) }, throws too. The parent context of a route holds only the parent fields that the query names, so a parent spread has no value either.Possible break: a query that selects a source field beside an aggregate without
groupBynow throws when it compiles. Before, that field was alwaysundefined. To fix such a query, aggregate the field (for example withmax) or add it togroupBy.The same rule with
groupByThe grouped path now uses the same check. A select value needs one value for each group outside its aggregates: a literal, a group key, or a parent field. Two changes follow from this rule:
add(count(c.id), c.v)withgroupBy(c.k). Before, the grouped path did not check wrapped aggregates, soc.vwas dropped silently.A nested include beside an aggregate now throws, with or without
groupBy. A nested include has one Collection for each row, not one value for each group. Before, it wasnullwithoutgroupBy.Group keys, aliases and HAVING
The same rule now applies in more places:
inArray(c.k, ['a', 'b'])from itsgroupBybuilds a new array, so it threw before. It now reads the group key. A Date orNaNliteral works the same way.having(({ c }) => eq(c.k, 'a'))withgroupBy(c.k)removed every group before. It now keeps groupa. This was also wrong onmain.NonAggregateExpressionNotInGroupByError. Before, it removed every group with no error.groupBywhose select only wraps its aggregate, such as{ n: add(count(c.id), 1) }, now accepts HAVING. Before, it threwHavingRequiresGroupByError, but a top-levelcountwas accepted.unionAll, a field of the union's rows outside an aggregate now throws. HAVING can still read the select's values through$selected. Before this change it was published asundefined. Onmainthe grouped form threw.Evidence

The oracle does not generate several group keys.
Two parents can be equal under query equality but differ exactly, such as
x: 0andx: -0. These parents share one include route. So a parent field can show the exact value of the other parent. That value is equal under query equality. So this PR records the behavior as a limit inARCHITECTURE.md, and does not add a route for each exact parent.✅ Checklist
