fix(export): recover nearby frames before sparse clip starts - #1480
A cut at 1.25 s in a screen recording with frames at 1.0 s and 2.0 s fails export: the forward seek lands at 2.0 s and clip-start validation rejects it, although a valid frame is only 0.25 s before the cut.
When the initial seek lands too far ahead, try a bounded 0.5 s look-behind and reuse the existing hold/peek walk to select the last frame due at the cut. This recovers the nearby preceding image without displaying the future update early. Existing large-gap rejection and offset-source handling remain covered by the integration suite.
New native regression fails before the fix and passes after it. It checks the held green image at 1.25 s and 1.983 s, the blue image when due at 2.017 s, and real MP4 frame counts. Variants cover camera/no-camera and decoder reuse after an earlier clip.
cargo test -p openscreen-compositor --lib --tests -- --test-threads=1: 492 unit tests pass; 15/16 export timing tests pass. The existing mp4_export_bounds_tail_recovery_and_reports_the_correct_source fails with No video frames were exported because the remuxed fixture now reports a container duration ending before the requested tail. Verified identical failure on unmodified main at 290bd3a; this patch does not change it.
With OPENSCREEN_TEST_MEDIA set to the generated fixtures, cargo test -p openscreen-compositor --test export_timing -- --test-threads=1 --skip mp4_export_bounds_tail_recovery_and_reports_the_correct_source: 15 passed, including large-gap rejection, nonzero origins, cancellation and output preservation.
Installed 2.2.1 CLI fails the synthetic two-clip project with Cannot export clip 2; the newly built addon + app renderer exports it successfully.
Patched app CLI also exports the affected private project with every original cut unchanged; the resulting MP4 decodes without errors and contains video and audio.
Both TypeScript checks, npm run lint (existing warnings), npm run docs:check, and git diff --check pass.
Three focused reuse/quality/efficiency reviews found no actionable issues.
Desktop GUI automation was attempted twice but the computer-use service timed out during initialization/app selection, so no real OS GUI export is claimed. The isolated test app launched and was closed after testing. Capture/devices, signing/packaging, and Windows/Linux runtime tests were not performed; the scoped result is recorded in the manual checklist. Opening as draft for maintainer review and cross-platform CI.
Post-Deploy Monitoring & Validation
During maintainer validation of the next candidate build, export the synthetic project from #1479 and confirm green is held before 2.0 s and blue appears only when due. Check for Cannot export clip / screen video has no readable frame in export logs and rerun the large-gap rejection test. Successful MP4/GIF exports and unchanged rejection of the deliberately damaged fixture are the healthy signals. If future frames appear early or large gaps stop being rejected, hold release and revert this change. Owner: release maintainer; window: candidate validation before promotion.
Summary by CodeRabbit
Bug Fixes
Fixed clip timing for sparse recordings: when a clip starts shortly after an available frame, the preceding image is shown until the next frame is due.
Corrected exports for clips starting at 1.25 seconds, including clips with or without a camera and clips that follow another clip. Exported videos now have the expected frame count.
Clip-start seeking now checks for a usable preceding frame within 0.5 seconds when the initial seek lands too far ahead. Regression tests cover sparse screen recordings across camera and preceding-clip scenarios, and verify inspected frames and exported MP4 frame counts.

Summary
Recover a nearby preceding frame crates/compositor/src/timeline_walk.rs
If the initial seek is not accepted, seek_clip_start searches backward within the tail tolerance. When it finds a non-null frame at or before the target, it advances to the target and returns that result.
Fixture instructions and tests cover sparse updates, with and without a camera, and as the first clip or after a preceding clip. The results log records inspected-frame and MP4 frame-count checks, test results, and checks that were not run.
getopenscreen/openscreen#1418: Changes the same export timeline-walk behavior and documents the clip-start seek margin.
getopenscreen/openscreen#1377: Introduces the clip-start recovery rule that this change extends for sparse recordings.

The sparse-frame recovery has a bounded timing edge case: an update with unusable timestamps may appear early. Merge with owner awareness of that limitation; exported-pixel checks would strengthen regression coverage.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
Directly linked issue #1479 is open and active. Its coding requirement: when a clip start falls near a valid preceding frame in a sparse screen recording, hold that frame until the next update is due, without moving the cut or re-encoding. Larger unreadable gaps and missing camera footage must still fail.
Evidence at head (crates/compositor/src/timeline_walk.rs, read via file):
seek_clip_start first calls seek_to_or_last(target). When accepts_clip_start returns None (the landed frame is more than 0.5 s ahead of the target), the function now calls seek_to(target - 0.5).
If that look-behind lands on a frame at or before the target, the function calls advance_decoder_to(decoder, target, 0.0). That reuses the existing hold walk (frame_step with Hold for a future pts). The preceding frame is held and the future frame is not shown early. For the issue case (frames at 1.0 s and 2.0 s, target 1.25 s), the look-behind lands at 1.0 s, and the hold keeps the 1.0 s frame until 2.0 s is due.
If the look-behind finds no usable frame, the function falls through to the existing first-frame check. The look-behind does not accept a future frame, so the rejection path is kept for larger gaps.
Tests: the summary lists export_timing.rs (+94 lines) with a regression test for 1.25 s starts, with and without camera, and for MP4 frame counts. The author reports a fail-before and pass-after result and 15 passing export-timing tests with OPENSCREEN_TEST_MEDIA set. I did not read the test file. These test results are author-reported evidence, not verified in this review.
Limits: the diff read against the base failed because blobs were missing from the checkout. I read the head file only. The tail of seek_clip_start was truncated in the read, so the exact handling of the origin check (large-gap rejection) is inferred from the surrounding pre-existing code and the author's test report. No contrary evidence was found.

Explanation
The change set has three files, per the supplied summary.
crates/compositor/src/timeline_walk.rs (+11/-3): the look-behind added to seek_clip_start. This is the core fix for #1479. It reuses advance_decoder_to and does not change the normal seek path or the offset-stream first-frame path.
crates/compositor/tests/export_timing.rs (+94): a regression test for the #1479 sparse-clip case and a sparse_colors.mp4 fixture recipe. Tests that support the linked fix are in scope.
technical-documentation/testing/manual-e2e-checklist.md (+1): a results-log entry that records the verification for #1479. This is documentation of the change, so it is in scope.
No unrelated feature, refactor, or formatting change was identified in the supplied summary. I did not read the full base-to-head diff because the diff read failed. This conclusion relies on the supplied change summary and the head file read.

Search the preceding window before accepting a future clip-start frame.
When the next update lands within 0.5 s after the cut, accepts_clip_start accepts that future frame. The preceding-frame search below it never runs. On the macOS and Windows decoders, updates at 1.0 s and 1.5 s with a cut at 1.25 s export the 1.5 s frame at the cut.
Run the bounded preceding search before accepting a future frame. Keep the first-frame check for offset streams, where the first frame is after the cut.

In the clip-start selection flow around decoder.seek_to, run the bounded
preceding-frame search before accepting a future frame, so a frame after target
cannot preempt an available preceding frame. Preserve the first-frame check for
offset streams, where the first frame occurs after the cut.
Add a pixel check for the exported MP4 at the cut.
The docstring says the export must hold the preceding image and then adopt the next one. The MP4 branch checks only the frame count and the probed frame count, so an export with the right frame count and a wrong image at the cut still passes. Inspection already covers the shared frame selection. This gap affects the export-only output path.
Read the exported file back with the same pixel check used by the inspection loop. The sparse fixture is already an MP4 passed to render_frames, so the exported out.mp4 can use the same helper. Check the expected channel at the cut frames (first_frame + 22 and first_frame + 23), using the same tolerance as the inspection assertions.

Reproduced #1479 with the 2.2.1 CLI on macOS and Windows (2.1.2 exports the same project). The fix holds the preceding frame within the existing 0.5 s tolerance, which covers ScreenCaptureKit's ≤1 s update interval, while the 2 s hole test keeps rejecting. Thanks!
