Description

@michael

Would still recommend Fly.io as the default, but https://github.com/hunvreus/devpush looks like a great alternative too. May be worth setting up and documenting.

Not a fan of serverless, but potentially the new https://void.cloud/ (with CloudFlare behind the scenes) might be something getting popular in the Svelte community.

The challenge here is read-after-write consistency because D1 writes and reads might have a delay due to syncing replicas across regions.

    Deployment Platforms

    Category Fly.io Koyeb Nodion Bunny.net
Type Edge VM / PaaS Serverless PaaS PaaS Edge platform (containers + scripting + DB)
    Compute billing Per-second VM billing (fly.io) Per-second compute billing (Koyeb) Per-second billing (Nodion) Per-second CPU/RAM usage (docs.bunny.net)
    Example instance (closest match) 2 vCPU / 2GB = $11.83/mo (fly.io) 2 vCPU / 8GB = $0.32/hr ($238/mo full) (Koyeb) 2 vCPU / 4GB = €20/mo (Nodion) No fixed instance (usage-based CPU/RAM) (docs.bunny.net)
    Autoscaling Yes Yes Yes Yes
Scale to zero Supported (stop machines) (fly.io) Supported (Koyeb) Supported (per-second billing implies idle=0) (Nodion) Not explicitly stated for containers
Database offering External / managed Postgres Serverless Postgres (scale-to-zero) (Koyeb) Managed databases SQLite-compatible (libSQL) (docs.bunny.net)
Edge compute (functions) No (VM-based) No (VM-based) No Yes (Edge Scripting billed per CPU time + requests) (docs.bunny.net)
Global deployment Yes (multi-region) Yes (multi-region) (Koyeb) Yes Yes (40+ regions) (docs.bunny.net)
Bandwidth pricing $0.02/GB (EU) (fly.io) 100GB free, then $0.02/GB (Koyeb) €0.02/GB (Nodion) Usage-based (egress billed separately, CDN pricing applies) (docs.bunny.net)
Included bandwidth None 100GB/month (Koyeb) None None
Storage pricing $0.15/GB/month volumes (fly.io) $0.50/GB/month (DB) (Koyeb) €0.05/GB/month object storage (Nodion) Separate (storage + DB billed by usage) (docs.bunny.net)
Cold start / idle cost Stopped machines only pay storage (fly.io) Scale-to-zero → no compute cost (Koyeb) Per-second billing → no compute cost (Nodion) Depends on usage (CPU/RAM billed only when used) (docs.bunny.net)
Pricing model clarity Fixed presets + usage Instance tiers + usage Fixed instance tiers Fully usage-based (no presets)

    Normalized cost scenario

    2 vCPU, 2GB RAM (closest match), 1TB egress, 10% usage (≈73h/month)

Cost component Fly.io Koyeb Nodion Bunny.net
    Compute (full month equivalent) $11.83 (fly.io) $238.08 (2 vCPU / 8GB) (Koyeb) €20 (2 vCPU / 4GB) (Nodion) Not defined (usage-based) (docs.bunny.net)
    Compute (10% usage) $1.18 $23.81 €2.00 Depends on CPU seconds used (docs.bunny.net)
    Bandwidth (1TB) $20 (fly.io) $18 (100GB free + 900GB × $0.02) (Koyeb) €20 (Nodion) Not fixed (egress billed separately) (docs.bunny.net)
    Total monthly ≈ $21.18 ≈ $41.81 ≈ €22 (~$24) Not computable from docs (no fixed CPU/RAM rates)
Idle cost behavior Near-zero (stopped machines) (fly.io) Zero (scale-to-zero) (Koyeb) Zero (per-second billing) (Nodion) Zero if no CPU/RAM usage (docs.bunny.net)

    Notes:

    • Bunny compute pricing cannot be converted to a monthly equivalent because it is billed per CPU-second actually consumed, not provisioned capacity. (docs.bunny.net)
    • Koyeb does not offer a 2GB RAM / 2 vCPU tier; closest documented tier is 2 vCPU / 8GB. (Koyeb)
    • All platforms bill egress separately except Koyeb (partial included). (Koyeb)

Nodion seems like a good alternative to Node. Potentially everything could be handled in one place. Including DNS, so there'd be just one place to set everything up.

They also waive invoices < 5€, so most sites would be hosted for free.
